Sunday Race Singapore Grand Prix

Renault's double world champion Fernando Alonso won his first race in more than a year on Sunday while Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead to seven points after a sensational Singapore Grand Prix.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa, a point behind Hamilton before Formula One's first night race, suffered a potential hammer blow to his title hopes after a pitstop blunder sent him from first to last. He finished 13th and out of the points.

Brazilian Massa had started on pole position and was on course to take the championship lead from Hamilton before a safety car interlude followed by a disastrous first pitstop changed the complexion of the race.

Alonso, who had started in 15th place, took advantage of a safety car interlude and Massa's pitstop blunder to move up the field and collect the 20th win of his career and first since Italy last year for McLaren.

Both Ferraris failed to score a point and world champion Kimi Raikkonen has now failed to get on the board in four consecutive races, his 27 point deficit to Hamilton all-but ruling him out of the title race.

Rosberg had to fend off Hamilton in the closing laps before bagging a career-best second place and he said that Lady Luck had finally smiled on the Williams team.

Pictures of Qualifications for Singapore GP

Ferrari's Felipe Massa stormed to pole position for the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix Saturday, topping the times during qualifying ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

It was a crucial drive by the Brazilian with front row of the grid likely to be decisive on the bumpy Marina Bay street circuit where overtaking will be extremely difficult.

Defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen, desperate for a win here to keep alive his slim hopes of retaining his title, was third fastest for Ferrari and BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica was fourth.

Hamilton was happy to settle for second after almost missing the third qualifying session, and warned that overtaking would be almost impossible during Sunday's race.

But for a resurgent Fernando Alonso, the world champion in 2005 and 2006 who topped the final practice and looked to be good for pole position, it proved to be a disastrous evening.

It all went wrong for the Spaniard in the second qualifying session when the engine of his Renault cut out, leaving the frustrated 19-time Grand Prix winner no option but to climb out of his car and put his head in his hands.

It means he will have to start from 15th, effectively ruling out any chance of victory and only the third time he has qualified outside the top 10 this year.

Friday Free Practise Singapore Grand Prix

Double world champion Fernando Alonso was quickest in final practice for the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday, putting his rivals in the shade ahead of qualifying for Formula One's first night-time race.

The Renault driver, who posted the fastest time in second practice on Friday, picked up from where he left off by streaking round the city-state's floodlit circuit in a time of 1 minute, 44.506.

McLaren's championship leader Lewis Hamilton was second quickest, a full 0.613 seconds behind the Spaniard, while Ferrari's Felipe Massa, a point behind the Briton in the standings, was third fastest.

World champion Kimi Raikkonen had another practice session to forget, languishing way down the order after taking his Ferrari down a run-off area, while McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen also struggled to generate pace after his team took advantage of a "free" engine change.

Giancarlo Fisichella, who was the first driver to take his car onto the circuit in Friday's opening practice, gave spectators the first spectacular crash of the race. His car went airborne after going straight over a chicane approaching turn 10 and smashed head on into the barriers.

Fisichella appeared unhurt in the collision but his car suffered extensive damage.
