The Ferrari F60 Unveiling

With the 2009 Formula One season opener in Melbourne, Australia only 72 day away, Ferrari debuts its 2009 competitor.

The 2009 Ferrari Formula One competitor is dubbed the F60 to denote Ferrari’s 60th season of involvement in the racing series. The car is significantly changed from the 2008 car as mandated by the rules. According to Ferrari’s Felipe Massa “all these things make it very different for us all to drive” referring to the addition of KERS and rule changes.

With the new aerodynamic regulations, Ferrari had to redesign the layout of the car, sidepods, and safety components for optimal weight distribution. This included redesigning the transmission to help aid the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. The transmission is an updated version of the 7-speed limited-slip differential semi-automatic electronically controlled gearbox. The transmission is still placed longitudinally and encased in carbon fiber.

The car has an updated 2.4-liter V-8 engine, designated the 056, which remains a structural element. In accordance with the 2009 rules, the 056 V-8 rev-limiter has been reduced to 18,000 RPM and the engine will hopefully last 2500 km. With Formula One operating costs so high, each driver is allowed only eight engines for the 17 races in the 2009 season.

In accordance with the 2009 rule changes, the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) makes its debut this season as well. Ferrari’s system has been developed in cooperation with Magneti Marelli and Felipe Massa has been positive about the system so far. In addition to redesigning the car to substantial rule changes, Ferrari will use a new Brembo designed braking system. The new Brembo’s use ventilated carbon fiber disks.
